Delicious and Easy Deconstructed Sushi Salad for Sushi Lovers!

I love sushi, I won’t lie, maybe to an unhealthy extent. However, when it comes to the rarity of buying it, and being either lazy or unskilled at making it, I came up with a solution. This specific dish is similar to both sushi and poke. I had no idea what poke was when I made it and they are surprisingly alike. Deconstructed sushi salad is simple, fast, and perfect when I am looking for a sushi substitute.

Deconstructed sushi salad is a mix of several common sushi components, and is totally DIY and customizable. By adding different sushi ingredients, you can have something different each time and experiment with absolutely anything. For example, you could add imitation crab, avocado, and cucumber as the sushi ingredients to make California Roll deconstructed sushi salad (I refer to it as sushi salad a lot, you will see). If you’ve ever tried to make sushi, you might be able to appreciate the fact that you can add in as many ingredients without worrying about your sushi being overloaded. Below I’m including some tips and recommendations, and (finally) a recipe of my most recent sushi salad (more to come) and a few other ideas! Enjoy!

Tips!

  1. I recommend layering the ingredients.
  2. If you are adding soy sauce or any liquid sauce (I forgot this several times) and you want to add nori (nori is the seaweed) I recommend placing it at the bottom of your bowl. Otherwise, the soy sauce will just pool on top of the nori and most likely it will begin to soak up some of the liquid) while some remains on the top. I personally don’t enjoy eating soggy nori and having soy sauce pooled on top. In my opinion, having the soy sauce partially absorbed by the rice is superior. This is totally up to you, however.
  3. The question whether to use normal rice or sushi rice is pretty conflicting seeing as you are making SUSHI salad, but there isn’t really a need for the sushi/sticky rice as you don’t need to roll it. I usually just use whichever rice there is or the one that is in the front of the cabinet. However, for recipes I list, I used sushi/sticky rice.

My Most Recent Creation!

  • About a cup of white or sushi rice (any kind you like for sushi works in this instance, but I use white or sushi rice, which is short grain.)
  • 1/2 avocado sliced vertically into thin strips and then 3-4 times horizontally
  • 1/2 of a large square of nori
  • 6-10 frozen shrimp, thawed and cut into bite sized pieces(Mine was cooked and frozen, but can be substituted for fresh, I’m just lazy)
  • Sriracha Mayo
  • Furikake (If you are unfamiliar with this you don’t have to use it. It is a rice topping that is generally sesame seeds and extremely small nori around the same size of the sesame seeds).
  • Soy Sauce

Instructions

  1. Place nori at the bottom of the bowl
  2. Spoon in rice and flatten into a one layer
  3. Place avocado in a non-strategic manner
  4. Take the shrimp and do the same as you did with the avocado
  5. Drizzle the sriracha mayonnaise on the salad.
  6. Drizzle soy sauce and furikake.
  7. Enjoy!

Other Ideas!

1. I made a version where I separated each ingredient and made a kind of ombre color. At the bottom was the rice and nori. I used many different ingredients, cucumber, avocado, wasabi, pickled ginger, smoked salmon, imitation crab, and carrot. I finally topped it with soy sauce.

2. I also have made sushi salad with the ingredients of a California roll. If you are unfamiliar with this sushi roll, it consists of imitation crab, avocado, and cucumber, and the same base.

3. As mentioned, there are many different possibilities so here are a few (trust me there are more)

  • Salmon
  • Trout
  • Imitation Crab
  • Avocado
  • Cucumber
  • Eel
  • Sweet Potato
  • Cream Cheese
  • Shrimp
  • Tuna
